Most moves that run long don't run long because of the movers. They run long because the truck arrives and half the house still needs deciding about. A little preparation buys back hours on move day, and in metro Atlanta — where parking, elevators, and traffic windows all matter — those hours are worth real money.
Start with access, because it's the thing people forget and the thing that stops a move cold. If you're in a high-rise anywhere around Perimeter, Buckhead, or Downtown, call your building at least two weeks out and reserve the freight elevator and the loading dock. Most buildings only allow moves in specific windows, some require a certificate of insurance from your mover, and a few won't let a truck on the property without advance notice. Ask us for the paperwork and we'll send it over.
If you're in a house, think about where a 26-foot truck actually parks. Narrow streets in Virginia-Highland, long wooded drives up around Chastain Park, and cul-de-sacs with tight turns all change how we stage the job. Tell us in advance and we'll bring the right size truck rather than shuttling loads in a smaller one.
Next, cut down what you're moving. This is the single biggest lever on cost. Every box we carry is time, and time is the bill. Three or four weeks out, go room by room and be honest about what's coming with you. Donate, sell, or dump the rest. People routinely pay to move things they throw away six months later.
Pack a first-night box and keep it with you, not on the truck. Medications, chargers, a change of clothes, toiletries, basic tools, toilet paper, coffee and whatever makes it. Label it clearly and put it in your own car. The night you move in you will not want to open fourteen boxes looking for a phone charger.
Label boxes by room and contents, not just room. A box marked Kitchen tells us where to put it. A box marked Kitchen — everyday plates and glasses tells you which one to open first. Write on the side of the box, not just the top, so you can still read the label when boxes are stacked.
Finally, handle the logistics that have nothing to do with boxes. Transfer utilities to start the day before you arrive, not the day of. File a change of address with USPS. Confirm the move time with us the week before. And if you have pets or small children, arrange for them to be somewhere else on move day — it's safer and genuinely faster.
